Hitting six figures in revenue is not the same as being able to make payroll. We hit multiple six figures at Blush while my husband went back to waiting tables, because revenue is not cash flow. The three lessons: cash flow is not profit, hope is not a forecast, and white space on your calendar is the point of growth, not a problem to solve.

The part you didn’t see was the years I would rather forget.

I talk a lot about the business I built, and I know it can sound like it was all rainbows, because the business I have now is the one I always dreamed of: freedom of time, comfortable income, a great reputation. But there were years where the tears and the anxiety flowed freely, because I was building it in the school of hard knocks.

Nobody handed me a playbook. I figured it out by getting it wrong first, more than once. So here are three of those lessons, straight from the years I would rather forget, so you do not have to learn them the same way I did.

Hard Knock Lessons

The version of my business people see now took years that you did not. The freedom and the reputation are real, and so were the seasons that got me here, the ones that came with real fear and real tears. I do not share that for sympathy. I share it because the lessons inside those years are the ones that changed everything.

“The part you didn’t get to see are the hard lessons that got me here.”

Here are three of them, and the first one still humbles me the most.

Six Figures and Still Broke

I hit six figures at Blush, multiple six figures, and I told myself I had made it. At that same time, my husband Ira went back to work as a server at the restaurant where we met, not once but twice. You have heard me say he has worked with me full-time for 14 years and co-owns both our companies, and people picture a fairytale, husband and wife building an empire from day one. That is not what happened. He came on full-time, things got tight fast, and when the money got tight he put an apron back on to cover the gap.

“You can have six figures moving through your business and still not have enough sitting in the bank account to make payroll on Friday.”

Here is what was so humbling: I was staring at six figures in revenue and calling us successful, and I did not understand the difference between profit margin and cash flow. They are not the same thing. My husband, never afraid to do what needed doing, worked a shift so our family could be okay, while I learned that lesson the hard way.

Cash flow is not profit. Hope is not a forecast. And white space is not a problem to solve.

Know Your Numbers

Lesson one is to know your numbers: the difference between what you are making, revenue, and what is landing in the bank, profit. I used to say a wedding did not cost me much because it was just my time. I cringe at that now.

“Time is the most valuable resource that we have, and I did not understand how to price the cost of a wedding.”

Treating my time as free meant I never priced the true cost of the work, and that miscalculation cost us years of frustration and sanity. Your time is the most expensive thing you bring to a wedding, and until it shows up in your pricing, your numbers will keep lying to you.

Hope Is Not a Forecast

Lesson two is what caused that cash gap in the first place: I never learned to forecast revenue. I did not track receivables, the money already on the books but not yet landed. I did not track my conversion rate, so I had no idea how many leads had to walk through the door to hit our monthly number. And I did not know our breakeven, not roughly, not at all.

“When you’re hoping instead of forecasting, you can’t hire with confidence.”

So every month was a guessing game. The first of the month came with a wave of anxiety while I hoped enough money showed up to cover the bills. When you are hoping instead of forecasting, you cannot say yes to a good opportunity, you cannot buy equipment, and you cannot hire, because you do not know what you can afford. Knowing what is coming from receivables and what you need to sell in new retainers to break even is not optional. It is the foundation of growing without the panic.

Protect Your White Space

Lesson three came later, once we finally had a team that could run things without me in every role. For the first time I had white space on my calendar, and instead of relief I felt guilt. My team was out working weddings and I was not, so I started filling my calendar back up. I picked up weddings I did not need to work and told myself the team needed to see me out there too.

“I was climbing back into the forest when the entire point of building a team was so I could finally get above the trees.”

That is exactly when growth slows, not when you step back, but when you refuse to. The CEO work, the growth work, the work only you can do, cannot happen when your calendar looks identical to the days you had zero employees. Your role changes as the business grows. White space is not idle time. It is where vision, goal setting, and strategy live, and your business needs you there for it to keep scaling.

Before You Go

Three lessons, lived the hard way so you do not have to: cash flow is not profit, hope is not a forecast, and white space on your calendar is not a problem to solve. It is the whole point of growing your business.

If you are staring at revenue that looks healthy and still feeling the Friday-payroll panic, you are not failing. You are missing a few numbers, and numbers are learnable. That is the entire reason I built Wedding Pro CEO, to help you shortcut the hard parts of scaling a profitable business.

Inside Wedding Pro CEO, we sit down with your real numbers, your receivables, your conversion rate, your breakeven, and build the forecast that turns the guessing game into a plan you can hire and grow from.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can a six-figure business still not make payroll?

Because revenue is not cash flow. Six figures can move through your business while the bank account is empty on payday. Profit margin and cash flow are different things, and confusing them is what leaves you short even when sales look strong.

What is the difference between revenue and profit?

Revenue is what you are making, the money moving through the business. Profit is what is left, what lands in the bank after the cost of doing the work. If you treat your time as free, your profit number will be wrong.

How do I forecast revenue in my wedding business?

Track three things: your receivables (money on the books but not yet landed), your conversion rate (how many leads you need to hit your number), and your breakeven. Together they replace the monthly guessing game with a real plan.

Why does filling my calendar back up slow my growth?

Because the work only you can do, vision, strategy, and growth, cannot happen when your calendar looks like it did with zero employees. Growth slows not when you step back, but when you refuse to and climb back into the day-to-day.

Is white space on my calendar a bad thing?

No, it is the point of growing. White space is where vision casting, goal setting, and strategy happen. It is not idle time to fill, it is the room your business needs you to hold so it can keep scaling.

Where do I start if this sounds like my business?

Start with your numbers. Get clear on cash flow versus profit, then build a simple forecast from your receivables, conversion rate, and breakeven. If you want help, a Gap Assessment with our team walks through exactly where you are stuck.
