Once upon a time, this was a coveted option for work time. If you were lucky enough to be able to work from home or have a flexible home/office work schedule, you were considered one of the lucky ones.
Now, weeks into this quarantine, how are we all feeling about working from home?? Are you thinking “Just give me a reason to get out of my jammies and do my hair!! Please!!” Haha!!!
Well, since literally 90% of our world is now figuring out what working from home looks like, I thought I’d share 3 tips with you that I think are vital for a healthy home/life balance when both occur in the same space.
1. Never work from your bed/bedroom. I saw this one in an article from Trello (my favorite project management tool) and loved it! When you work from your bedroom your brain isn’t able to differentiate the space from work time and sleep time and you will have a harder time falling and staying asleep. It’s important to separate workspace from sleep space to help you shut it down.
2. Create a defined workspace. This is the hardest one for me by far because I LOVE working from my living room. There is a bright light, a big comfy couch, and a spacious coffee table to spread out on! Before COVID, I only worked from home 1 day a week so it was my time to relax and work comfortably NOT sitting at a desk.
But now that we are working from home full time, I’ve had to create a comfy workspace in my office that I can enjoy. Having this defined space has helped me to shut off when it’s time for the day to end and because I can close the door to my office I’m not tempted to grab my computer when I’m sitting and watching TV with the family!
3. Define your work time. Just because you CAN work all day doesn’t mean you should. Set work hours. If you have a big project to kick out, knowing your work time is ending will help you to push to get it done and not get distracted. If you absolutely have to burn the midnight oil, set a quiet time, get some dinner, relax for a bit with the family and then set 2-3 hours aside later that night to get back to it. This will help you to refresh and re-charge your creative juices!
What tips do you have for working from home?? I’d love to know!
